WALTHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sep 24, 2025--
Wolters Kluwer Health today announced UpToDate ® Expert AI, a new generative AI-powered clinical decision support (CDS) solution designed to support the needs of both doctors and healthcare systems. UpToDate Expert AI sets a new standard in how healthcare professionals can easily access evidence-based answers to medical questions at the point of care, while supporting healthcare organizations’ efforts to responsibly integrate AI into their infrastructure and workflows.
UpToDate Expert AI is the next evolution of UpToDate, the market-leading CDS solution used at thousands of hospitals around the world. Similar to a chatbot, UpToDate Expert AI provides fast access to GenAI-powered answers to clinical questions, based on UpToDate’s expert-authored and peer-reviewed content. Users receive context-rich responses for each question with single-click access to the assumptions driving the answers, the source of the answer in UpToDate, and the step-by-step rationale used to generate it, allowing clinicians to quickly review recommendations, and then decide their next steps in patient care.
“UpToDate has always been focused on providing clinicians with evidence-based medical information at the point of care. With UpToDate Expert AI, we are responding to our customers’ needs to apply the speed and power of GenAI for reliable, trustworthy medical answers while adding value into the enterprise workflow,” said Greg Samios, CEO, Wolters Kluwer Health.
UpToDate Expert AI offers a unique approach to developing answers: UpToDate Expert AI’s Clinical Intelligence answers medical questions by emulating how expert clinicians reason and act, through a robust, multi-layered validation framework. Clinical Intelligence leverages the expertise of Wolters Kluwer’s 7,600 medical experts. This approach ensures the algorithms are expert-driven at every step of an interaction . This rapid synthesis of complex information helps clinicians make faster, more informed decisions, supporting better patient outcomes.
“For clinicians, UpToDate Expert AI harnesses the clinical wisdom of our thousands of expert contributors to think like a clinical colleague—answering complex, highly specific questions with nuance and clarity. The clinical reasoning is unambiguous, drawing solely from Wolters Kluwer evidence-based content, to help doctors confidently keep up with continual changes in medical research,” said Peter Bonis, MD, Chief Medical Officer, Wolters Kluwer Health. “We are providing a new level of support for better decisions by the care team and better care for patients, while meeting the needs of enterprises for transparency and governance.”
UpToDate editors and authors are continuously reviewing new research from leading medical journals as well as clinical trial data, drug labeling, pharmacology studies, and MEDLINE abstracts to update the content in UpToDate.
“UpToDate has always been a go-to resource for our clinicians, and UpToDate Expert AI takes that to the next level,” said Charles Sonday, DNP, Associate Chief Medical Information Officer, St. Luke’s University Health Network. “It’s not just a tech upgrade—it’s a smarter, faster way to get trusted answers when they’re needed most. We’re rolling this out because it aligns with how we deliver care: quick, reliable, and grounded in evidence. It’s another step forward in making sure our teams have the right tools at the point of care.”
UpToDate Expert AI is purpose-built for centralized, enterprise-wide deployment and management. For administrators, Wolters Kluwer’s established ecosystem approach embeds UpToDate in top tech platforms, AI scribes, and EHRs, supporting policy compliance and governance. For clinicians, deep integration in their workflow reduces disruptions and toggling between apps while meeting with patients.
Samios added, “We’re committed to supporting enterprise needs for transparency, compliance, and governance. This is the new last mile of healthcare, and we have been collaborating with health systems for two years to ensure they get a solution that offers responses they can trust and meets their array of needs.”
